Infoblox Inc. (NYSE:BLOX), the network control company, today announced the Infoblox OpenStack Adapter, delivering the first open-source connector for bringing enterprise-grade network control to the OpenStack platform.
OpenStack is a free, open-source platform for building public and private clouds. Many organizations are initiating OpenStack deployments because they want to enjoy the cost benefits and broad developer community support of an open-source platform, while avoiding vendor lock-in. However, OpenStack lacks robust tools for network automation, monitoring, and management that enterprises demand for their mission-critical environments.
Infoblox is helping to make OpenStack more enterprise-ready with the free Infoblox OpenStack Adapter (www.infoblox.com/openstack), which integrates the Infoblox solution for delivering critical network services such as DNS, DHCP, and IP address management—a category known as DDI—with OpenStack. Infoblox is the first enterprise-grade DDI vendor to offer an open-source adapter, giving the OpenStack community the opportunity to evaluate and customize the adapter’s underlying code.
The goal for Infoblox is reducing the operational friction many customers encounter with their cloud deployments. Without enterprise-grade DDI, network teams are forced to rely on manual IP address block assignment and DNS provisioning. They can spin up virtual machines in minutes, but in many cases it still takes hours or days to allocate IP address blocks and DNS records in their OpenStack environments. The Infoblox OpenStack Adapter brings the Infoblox DDI solution to OpenStack, including:
- Automated IP address and DNS name provisioning and reclamation for faster and more efficient deployment of virtual machines in an OpenStack cloud
- A single management console that automates network services for cloud, virtual, and physical networks—even across multiple cloud platforms—eliminating inefficiency and errors caused by multiple points of control
- High availability and automated disaster recovery failover for core IP network services, including DNS, DHCP, and IP address management, delivering survivability that matches enterprise-grade requirements
- Smart folders for managing networks and tenants by group, VLAN, or network, including support for floating IP addresses and overlapping fixed IP addresses, allowing network information to be grouped in logical sets
- Support for multiple overlapping networking blueprints for DNS and DHCP, enabling DevOps to manage testing, quality assurance, and production environments without changing configurations

The Infoblox OpenStack Adapter (www.infoblox.com/openstack) is available now as a free download of open-source code that integrates with existing Infoblox DDI deployments and is compatible with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 5. For organizations that aren’t already using Infoblox, a free 60-day trial of Infoblox DDI is available as an online download (https://www.infoblox.com/downloads/software/virtual-ddi-evaluations). Infoblox expects to make the Infoblox OpenStack Adapter compatible with additional OpenStack distributions in the coming months.
