What is Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)?

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is an automatic configuration protocol, this service automatically assigns IP addresses to network devices when they show up on a network. In order to communicate, every device has to have an IP address. DHCP allows a device to be configured automatically, eliminating the need for intervention by a network administrator, and provides a central database for keeping track of devices that have been connected to the network, thus preventing two devices from accidentally being configured with the same IP address.
